If I remember, I think the tuition is above $3,000 for county residents who have to apply to Poly like everyone else in the city. You may want to call the school for more information.

what are the best colleges for film in the baltimore/DC area?
I want to go to college for film and am going to look at loyola college in maryland in a few weeks but they don't really have a film program. What are some other colleges in that area that have good film programs? preferably liberal arts schools but it doesnt really matter. They dont have to be schools that are specific to art and film.

Loyola is an outstanding school. You are lucky to get in and I hope you make the most of it. As for schools with film programs, you are limited. American, George Mason, and Howard are about it. The major film programs are on the west coast or NYC. However, consider putting together a major at Loyola that is a combination of visual arts and communications. Then you can do a grad program if you want to continue in this field. A Loyola degree really opens doors.

Do I have a chance to get into these universities?

Do I have a chance to get into these universities?
My overall high school GPA will be a 3.8. I haven't been involved in many extracurriculars. I'm a junior though, so if I do a lot of extracurriculars my senior year, get really good SAT scores and write a good essay do I have a chance of getting to the University of Maryland Baltimore County, the University of New Hampshire, or the University of Vermont? My dreams schools are Princeton, Johns Hopkins, and Dartmouth, but I know I don't have a chance there. :(

Hi, I'll be relocating to Maryland around the Aberdeen/ Bel Air/Edgewood area. For all of you locals, what is the best town/ neighborhood/ schools in the area. Any places that I should stay away form? Any reputabable realtors? Fun things to do and sight see? I do not know anyone there. Thanks for your help.

I'd stay away from Edgewood due to increased gang activity. The US 1 corridor is very safe from Balto Co. all the way to the Cecil County line. The first site has things to do and sight see for Harford County. I recommend the following realtor for Harford County.

Do you think the prices for Driving School is crazy?

Do you think the prices for Driving School is crazy?
I called around the areas where Im (Baltimore, Maryland) and the prices Ive found was ridiculous. The first place was 250.00, which is the normal price. The second place wanted 245.00, the third, 300.00 but that was in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The lowest Ive seen was 215.00. Which is a lot better than the rest, but still a crazy price. I remember it was a time where you didnt have to pay anything. All you had to do was have someone teach you how to drive, and than you would go and take the test. I think drunk driving and people that are 16-18 years old driving unsafe messed this up.

You are wrong guy,at the present time practically all state require certified driver education and many other very stringent requirements before you can become a licensed driver.

2
I agree the prices are crazy! Thankfully I got into 1st semester drivers ed this year and the fee was 200$ plus 20$ for licensing fees. The private places around here are around 300!

3
Stop complaining. Do you have any idea what it cost to get a license in Europe? About $3000. But than again they really teach people how to drive over there.

4
You're lucky if driving school is only $215 - 300. In ontario, most driving schools cost upwards of $500 - 1000. And here we DON'T require certified driving instructions to get your license. It may help with insurance, but it's not required. The outrageous cost is to help offset their cost of insurance, vehicles, and other such expenses for running a driving instruction school. Do you know how many accidents those cars go through with new drivers, and how often they have to get new cars?? A lot more often than if everyone learned with their parents. They also have to pay their teachers, and that gets expensive. So, be grateful that it's only a few hundred, rather than several. Good luck on your test.

well life is tough...nothing is cheap...lucky u saved all your birthday/christmas money and the money from babysitting and your paper rout...when i was 16 yrs old i had 3500 dollars in bank...good luck...tell ma &pa as soon as u can drive they woulnt have to

yes juilliard is a great school but only if you are THE best ballerina out there. the second best school (if not equally as good as juilliard) is NYU's dance school. it is pretty much just as selective and just as good. and actually OSU has an amazing dance program. only 30 students can major in dance at OSU every year so if that's what you're thinking you should check it out. some other well known schools for dance are: Arizona State University Butler University Florida State University Indiana University Marymount Manhattan College NYU, Tisch School of the Arts North Carolina School of the Arts Point Park University Southern Methodist University University of Arizona University of Michigan University of Oklahoma University of South Florida University of Utah

What major should I go for, pre-pharmacy, or pre-med?

What major should I go for, pre-pharmacy, or pre-med?
Im in high school and I am really confused on what major I should take in College. I am planning to attend the College of Notre Dame of Maryland in Baltimore. I'm not sure if I should study pre pharmacy or pre-med. I want something where I will make money. Im good at Math, not so much in science but Im willing to work hard. Please help me!! Any one who is a pharmacist or knows someone who is, please tell me your experience!!! Thanks!!!!!

I am in pharmacy school, and if you don't like science, you are screwed! You MUST love science...or they will be long 6 years of school. As far as med school, you will be studying science for longer time. If I were you, I'd reevaluate what you want in life...you can make money in other ways! GOOD LUCK!

2
I'm pre-pharmacy. I work in a pharmacy now and i LOVE it. The customers at the store are SOO nice. However, the one I work at is not very busy so I don't have as much stress. Also, I get to learn alot of stuff from the pharmacist I work with. She lives on her own and has an amazing house. I would do what you think is right. I changed my major once before I got into this field.

3
Pre-med and pre-pharmacy are not majors, but are nearly identical lists of required classes which may be found on the websites of medical and pharmacy schools. Any major is acceptable. May I suggest that you consider accounting as a career. In fact, you can major in it at many universities while you take the pre-med classes and can be admitted to medical school if you do well enough in science, etc. Then you will have a back-up if you are not admitted to medical or pharmacy school.

4
The College of Notre Dame in Maryland is a good choice. The college is opening a School of Pharmacy, and Notre Dame students have the inside track on admission. Also Notre Dame offers cross-registration for Johns Hopkins courses. Pre-Pharmacy/Pre-Med is not a "Major" รข€” it is a series of pre-requisite Medica//Pharmacy courses students take while completing a Major. The main error of students taking "pre-med/pharmacy" is that they don't realize most of them won't make it to these schools. Their Major should be chosen to give them good career prospects if they don't make it to Medical/Pharmacy School. The best Major for this purpose at Notre Dame of Maryland is Engineering.

3
Her chances are pretty good. She seems well rounded and has done well in school as well as done pretty well on the SAT's. I know an 1800 is a cut off for a lot of schools to get into the honors programs, so 1850 should be pretty solid to just get into the school.

4
I think she has a very good chance of getting into the University of Maryland Baltimore County and a reasonable chance at the University of Virginia. Her SAT and GPA are okay, but not spectacular, and Princeton, Cornell, and Johns Hopkins are highly competitive schools, while College Park is a very strong one. All except Baltimore County have national reputations. One thing that might make a difference is her class rank. I've seen people who said they had a 4.5 and were barely at the 50% of their high school class, so apparently their high schools gave REALLY easy grades. I don't know what a 3.9 means at her school, but I'm used to seeing scores over 4.0 and SATs well over 2000 for most of the schools you mention. As to the extracurriculars, they are fine, but will only help if she also has the academic qualifications. No school I know of will compromise their academic standards for a person who is engaged in many extracurricular activities, as much as they want that perfect student who is also well-rounded.

Good question. It depends on what you want to do. A 2 year grad takes the same test as a 4 year grad. Go for your assoc at a tech school where you get great hands on clinicals. You will start giving IM injections your 1st or 2 nd quarter where a university BS student doesn't start clinicall until way down the road. If you want to work the floors and ICU's you want to be a tech student. If you want to go straight to administration where you do lots of paperwork you want to go straight to university BS. However, alot of places want to see at least 1 year experience on the hospital floors where you have proven your basic nursing skills. This can be a problem for BSN students who are heavy on theory and light on skill. Most students I knew wanted to be the best nurses possible. They would have been very embarrassed to be 2nd rate at starting IV's or drawing blood or assisting with chest tubes, etc.so everybody went to tech. Then once they passed the state board exams they enrolled in the university for the 3-4th year. It's cheaper this way and you get a better education.

How about the University of Pittsburgh. They have a good medical school and they have really good bio-science programs. You do not have to go straight premed to get into medical school and honestly, you are better to have a solid degree in something like bio-engineering or genetics. That would give you more options when you graduate in case med school does not work out. Good luck.

Universities in Maryland...?
Are the universities in Maryland hard to get into if you are out of state, such as University of Maryland at Baltimore? What are the requirements to get into such a school GPA? SAT? Extra curriculars? What is the best University in Maryland for me in your opinion? I am from California I have an accumulative unweighted GPA of 3.43, weighted of 3.71 student council, debate, president of one club. I don't want too big of a campus with too big of a student body. I prefer smaller schools with a great campus life with school spirit and a great social scene and a nice setting. Large city would be nice and a nice economic/political program. DMX is right.. but beware UMCP is a big school. However, it has good traditions, ,school spirit and social events for students. The Economics program and Government&Politics (GVPT) program is one of the best in the countries. One of my majors is GVPT and I have professors that actually work in prestigious fields (ie consultant for WB, UN advisor, etc.). Professors have won academic awards such as the pulitzer award. It is also in a suburban area, but very close to Wash. D.C. (approx 3 mi to the border). --great internships and fed job potentials.

send a youtube video to college coaches they LOVE it when you send bad quality videos that look faked. it helps them sympathize with you and see your talent

If you didnt get recruited out of high school, then no offense but your talent must not be all too phenomenal bud The best players get scouted and recruited by college programs, my talent was nowhere near phenomal and I got recruited by a D-3 school

How you can do it? Well, first you have to get in touch with the countries you want to work with to obtain a trade license. If this is done, get in touch with the chamber and commerce of these countries and make some contacts. Hire staff and start working. Most important things to start a new business in foreign countries: follow the local laws, invest money and have good connections. (In your case connections to local authorties airport managers and hotels). In this case a local business consultant can be very helpfull. Take care and all the best.

Tips for med school?

Tips for med school?
Ok, so I am going into my freshmen year and I am beginning my work on my collage manuscript. I am in track, dance team, and marching band. Next year I will be in golf. I am in all advanced classes (except for geometry, but i am still a year ahead of most of my peers.) I will be taking 4 years of German and every summer I am taking an online math class so I can skip ahead a grade in math so I will be in pre-cal by my sophomore year. I have med classes at my school that i will be taking for the three years of high school that it is available for. I am in a ton of clubs such as FCCLA and NJHS (Which is made for getting you scholarships) And grades wise I think i am in the top 5% to 10% in my class. I want to get into Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore Maryland. Any tips for getting a full scholarship to the collage of my dreams? I am planning to be a pediatric neurosurgeon. The med classes are along side of my science classes. My school provides local jobs at medical facilities for the med students.

An over achiever like you is asking us for advice. I don't see a full sweep of science, including chemistry and biology unless you are including that in medical.

2
Try to find ways to show your interest in the field of medicine. See if you can find a job being an assistant as an assistant in the Radiology department of a hospital or something. Go to Johns Hopkins website and search for scholarships they offer. And try to work on what they're looking for in candidates.

3
Being the top 5-10% (instead of the real genius 0.1%) mean you have to show more REAL interest in medicine, esp if you say that you wanna be a paed neurosurgeon. Med school will select ppl who have vast interests but only the really top student. To get a scholarship, you need to be real good in a particular sport or art. Have you won anything in dance, golf, whatever to prove your trackrecord?

Why do people forget Maryland is a Southern State?

Why do people forget Maryland is a Southern State?
okay i grew up in an area of Maryland where we were very southern and i was raised southern belle. Then i moved into the city of Baltimore and it was completely different. When i tell people i want to go to school south of the mason dixon line they look at me and go "so you don't want to go to college in Maryland?" even Maryland is different! Can anyone provide help for why Maryland is lost in origins? yea just a little note to that first guy the southern culture i was talking about is more sophisticated and at my school we are constantly being told that we should say ma'am and sir but no one here seems to do it

MD has a level of sophistication and refinement so out of line with the rest of the South it "passes" as a northern state.

2
Because it's so close to "up north" and the Mason Dixon Line runs through it. It's no surprise that people would be confused about it. Further, big cities tend to be entities of their own rather than conforming to the culture around it. Orlando, for instance, with so many people from around the country doesn't seem to me like a "Southern" city, but it is.

3
Well it's mainly a Mid atlantic state. It can be both North and South. Southern MD and parts of Eatern MD are Southern-like. Whereas Carroll, Frederick, Washington, Hartford, & Baltimore counties are more North-like. The DC area is also a bit of a mix. Even Northern VA is very Maryland-like. Some parts feels more South and some feels more North.

4
People forget because it snows like crazy there and it's really not what you think when you think southern... If you can make me a good pitcher or sweet tea that tastes like in the South, then I will spread the word that MD is southern.

5
I live in Michigan and people tend to forget that we are part of the mid-west. Go figure...

6
I was looking online for some maryland slogans, and one came up for Baltimore: " The northernmost city of the south, and the southernmost city of the north". I guess since it is right in the middle, the technicality seems to have been forgotten. Also, even though I am from Baltimore City (born and raised), I think that most of the city is not up very high on the intelligence meter, which may be why they said that to you, but good luck with your schooling, and don't get caught up in any of the shooting waves that have been happening over the past few days (15 shootings and 9 stabbings in 2 days!!!).

getting accepted into a highly ranked medical school with a bachelors from a not so highly ranked school?

getting accepted into a highly ranked medical school with a bachelors from a not so highly ranked school?
I never really gave much thought to my future and grades until I got into college. I did not study at all for my SATs and did not give much thought about the classes that I took in high school. I applied to both university of maryland baltimore county (UMBC) and university of maryland college park and was accepted into both. i decided to attend UMBC because I got a scholarship. Now I am one of the most motivated people that I know. I got a 4.0 GPA and great extracurricular activities my freshman year. I will keep it up and do the absolute best that I can to become a doctor. So my question is, if I keep the high GPA, keep the great extracurriculars going, do amazing on the MCAT by studying my butt off and do great in everything else, will I be able to be accepted into medical schools like UNC chapel hill, UT southwestern, Baylor, Washing U in seattle, U of chicago, etc even though UMBC is not as renowned for its academic credentials and does not have a national standing?
Higher Education (University +) - 3 Answers

Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1
Its possible. UTMB and Baylor are all about the students' achievement and ability to retain you. Some of their students go to community colleges and later transfer there. However once inside its extremely competitive.

2
You will have a chance if your MCAT is high, some schools might be bias about your GPA because of your school, but if your MCAT is good they will look at you.

3
You got into UMBC on a scholarship and you hadn't given much thought about your grades and now you're pulling a 4.0? Very nice, clearly you have intelligence. Now, don't do something stupid like applying to a 'highly ranked' school. If you knew how schools were ranked, you wouldn't bother. There are two ranking processes: US News and World Report and the National Institute of Health. The US News criteria contain so many non-education issues that the Association of American Medical Colleges is trying to get them to stop. But if you think the number of parking spaces makes one school better than the other, then go ahead and select a school by their criteria. The NIH ranking system is based on the research dollars alloted to the school and number of Medicare/Medicaid patients treated. All medical schools are accredited by the LCME, which monitors every class at every school. If there is a significant change, either good or bad, inquiries are made. This assures that regardless of where you are educated, the end product is the same. So you can $16,000 a semester at a state university medical school or you can pay $50,000 a semester at a Big Name school--in the end, you'll get the same MD. Any idea of why the Harvards and Johns Hopkins of the world are considered "Big Name" schools versus the George Washingtons or Virginia Medical College? It has nothing to do with the medical school (again, the LCME assures that the education in all is equivalent). The reputations come from the residency programs and the medical centers that are aligned with the school. And once you get into medicine you'll understand that residency programs and medical centers have nothing--zilch--nada--to do with the medical school. When you begin to think about it, if schools like Johns Hopkins were so superior, only Johns Hopkins graduates would be considered for residencies at Hopkins. I worked at Hopkins for years and I can attest that very few Hopkins graduates were in the Hopkins residency programs. Once you get into medical school and begin to learn the ropes, you'll learn that where you did your undergrad doesn't matter. Once you get into a residency program you'll learn that where you went to medical school doesn't matter. All that does matter is where you did your residency. And residency program rankings do matter. And you're going to be surprised that many of the higher ranked residency programs are not at the Big Name programs. For example, there are two institutions that are world renowned for their Emergency Medicine residencies. They are equally ranked. One is UCLA, the other is your alma mater, the University of Maryland. Save yourself a hundred grand in student loan debt and stay within your university system until you select a specialty to practice. Then select the best residency program--if it is at a Big Name program that's okay. If it's at a lesser known program, no problem--everyone who cares will know you attended the better program.

School in York, England?

School in York, England?
I just turned 17 and I'm going into 12th grade this year. Once I graduate I planning to go to college in another country, obviously. Right now I live in Baltimore, Maryland, US. I've been looking at colleges since winter last year and recently I've had my mind set on going to school in another country. Preferably the UK. I've been looking at a bunch of schools and I really, really like The University Of York! I've been trying to get good information for an hour or so, but I figured I'd just ask myself. Could any one give me any tips?! Like, is it a real hard thing to do? Is it super expensive? Am I just totally dreaming here? Anything would be SO appreciated (:

I think that it is going to remain a dream for you. Of course if mummy and daddy have pots of money. Dreams can come true. York is one of my favourite cities. It has a wealth of history and the University is good. As a foreign student, you can live and do some work, but what you would earn would not cover the expense of the education and accommodation costs. Dare I say, even if you could get a job... Just renting a room in a shared house will cost you at least $75-$100 a week and you will probably also have to share the costs of utilities (gas-water-electric) and eat. If you do get accepted as a student, you would need to meet the cost of your studies too. The fees depend on the subject but they are quoting ร‚£3250 a year and with the exchange rate as it is That is over $5000. That means you will need a minimum of $30,000 to do a three year course and live very frugally during that time.

Do you think Baltimore's State's Attorney is in the wrong line of work with their racial attitudes?

Do you think Baltimore's State's Attorney is in the wrong line of work with their racial attitudes?
Patricia Coats Jessamy is the State's Attorney for Baltimore, Maryland. She is Black, one of the first Black students to graduate the law school at University of Mississippi where she is originally from. Anyway, she has the following view about the racial makeup of Baltimore's defendants- "It causes "a pain in my heart," she says, to see black men in shackles and chains lined up each morning outside Baltimore's Clarence M. Mitchell Jr. Courthouse, named for a civil rights leader." Now I am not saying she should have the mentality of a KKK member but I am saying that if she sees a problem in prosecuting Black men, she needs to work in a city like Billings, Montana, or Casper, Wyoming where there are few if any Black defendents period. My point is I think she is in the wrong line of work with a view like that considering that almost all of those who go court for felonies such as homicide, armed robbery, and narcotics violations in Baltimore specifically are Black men. My point is this, one shouldn't take a prosecutor's position if they let their racial views get on the job, especially if their views can influence the way the vast majority of defendants are handled.

Umm are you asking if it's really hard to get into the University of York? It shouldn't be too difficult...I'm not sure what qualifications you have (AP, IB etc.) but look here for the marks required (they might not have AP requirements, but you'll get an idea of what they expect just by looking at the A-level or IB requirements). SAT may be required: http://search.ucas.com/cgi-bin/hsrun/search/search/StateId/D7MCww_2Lo_ADm5abHyafKHiV5Hf3-4zHK/HAHTpage/search.HsSearch.submitForm?txtSubject=&cmbQual=&cmbAttend=&cmbInst=Y50&button1.x=23&button1.y=15 I'm not sure what subject you want to study, so I only gave you the link for the UCAS list on York. Click your subject of interest, and it will tell you everything about its program. Tuition is about 10,300-13,800 pounds depending on the program. I believe living is about 7,000 pounds. Personally, I don't feel that there is a need to study in England if you are from the US because most universities there are better and more internationally recognized than the York (with exception of Oxbridge and the constituents of the University of London). But, if you want to live in England in the future, do study in England instead of the US.

Is this a good high school schedule for college and dental school?

Is this a good high school schedule for college and dental school?
Hello, I am 15 years old. This coming up school year I will be a Freshman in High School. I want tobe an orthodontist or dentist. I know you need to take biology and chemistry and other sciecne classes to be a dentsit. I have made my schedules for high school with the classes they offer at my highschool. I posted it at the bottom of this page. These classes may change depending over the years. The high school i am attendning may remove these classes i wish to take through out the years. In addition these are the type of classes i plan to take to prepare me for college and dental school in high school. Im also migh take a health occupation class my junior and senior year of high school outside of my high school schedule and classes. It just depends on my work load, family, friends, and social life and if they still offer the class at the time i can take it. I figure it would be a good class to take to prepare me for certain things. In college I want to major in Biology or Chemistry. Whichever more interest me and I do better in. I also would like to know good colleges that have a wonderful science field and reputation. I live in Martinsburg West Virgina. I want to go to a college close to where my parents are. I want to see them as much as possible. The closet university near me is Shepard University. Its like fifteen minutes away. Shepard University would be perfect cause of its location but im not sure if it has a nice reputation and good science fiel and a good college that would look good when I apply to dental school. I also have considered West Virginia University. Its just the location that doesnt suit me. Its four hours away. And out of state colleges i like are Pennstate and University of Maryland. The problem with out of state colleges are most scholarship aids will not give you a scholarship to go to an out of state college as im told. Please name good colleges that are closest to where I live, have a good science field, a nice reputation, a college dental schools would like, and a college that is over all a nice college. A wonderful acedemic reputation and will benifit me and teach me very much for dental school and many other things. I would really like to go to shepard university, get my bachelors degree majoring in biology and go to West Virgina university school of dentistry or Baltimore school of dentisry. Please name colleges and dental schools with the preferences and details I have listed. Also what type of classes do you take in college besides biology and chemistry to major in biology and chemistry. It would be wonderful for a biology or chemistry major to post there college classes they took. In conclusion does the schedules at the bottom of this page look good if you want to be a dentist, what are good colleges near Martinsburg West Virginia with a good science field or just an over all good college ( by close i mean no loner then a five hour drive), and a pre dent program would be wonderful. Freshman Schedule 1.Algebra I honors 2.English 9 honors 3.Physical Science 9 4.World History 9 5.Health 9 6.Spanish I 7.Art I Sophomore Schedule 1.Geometry or Geometry honors 2.English 10 or English 10 honors 3.Biology or Biology Honors 4.United States History I 5.Spanish II 6.Building English Vocabulary skills (1/2 credit) & Basic Keyboarding (1/2 credit) 7.Creative Writing I Junior Schedule 1.Algebra II or Algebra II Honors 2.English Language Arts 11 or English Language Arts 11 Honors or AP English Language and Composition 3.Chemistry or Chemistry Honors 4.United States History II 5.Spanish III 6.Environmental Earth Science 7.Creative Writing II Senior Schedule 1.Trigonometry 2.English Language Arts 12 or English Language Arts 12 Honors or AP English Literature and composition 3.AP Chemistry or AP Biology or Physics 4.Civics and Government 5.Spanish IV 6.Microbiology 7.Human Anatomy and Physiology

I think you have a very decent chance of getting into both universities and most likely you will get in. Your scores are certainly high enough. However the honors program at UMD is very competitive and the middle 50th percentile scored between a 1340-1410. Don't get discouraged though, there is still a very decent chance you can make honors. There also apparently is something called College Park scholars which has a middle 50 of 1300-1410. Consider that too. As for UMBC, they recommend a 1400 combined on CR and Math, so your chances there may not be as high.

Are there any colleges close to John Hopkins in Maryland with the follwing info?
Ok, so I'm 95% sure I'm deciding on going to John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.(which is about 3 hrs. south of me) My boyfriend is going to a college that is 2 hrs. North of me. And so, if we go to these colleges we'll be 5 hrs. apart. We're still gonna stay together because we've been together forever and are a very normal, loving, serious couple (not like all the other stupid high-school romances) however after his first year he's agreed that if he didn't like his choice, that he'd come down and transfer to a college that's less than an hour away (we wanted to make sure that we get our own choices for college first, which is why he isn't just going to one near me first) OK so, i was just wondering if anyone knew of any colleges within an hour away from John Hopkins, a 4 yr school that isn't one of those "ITT tech or Devry" a regular college. here's his stats: gpa:3.0 SAT out of 2400: 1900 highschool: catholic/private high school, all four years, major: english/literature thanks! i'll 5 star any good answer :)

Hey :) You can do a search here. It's really specific when asking what you're looking for in a college, so I find that helpful. http://www.collegeboard.com/student/csearch/index.html

2
I would recommend looking at Goucher College, Hood College, University of Maryland-College Park, and University of Maryland--Baltimore County if he wants to stay really close. His stats seem to make him a pretty good match for all of these schools. Otherwise, the beauty of Baltimore is that it's pretty close to DC and Philadelphia, both of which have a lot of good schools.

Is is possible for someone with a criminal record to get a job teaching children?
I'm being harassed and bullied by a person who claims to be an elementary school principle in a Baltimore Maryland area school. He's in his late 40's and he's a serious nutbag. I would think it likely that somewhere along the line he had to have met up with the law for his behavior. I can't understand how someone like that could end up in the school systems unless the school system doesn't do a comprehensive background check or don't care. A report has been filed with the police department His weapon of choice seems to be automobles. I wonder if they do checks for serious automotive-related offenses

finish my current degree in a 1.5 years at my current school or start fresh from a new more reputable school?

finish my current degree in a 1.5 years at my current school or start fresh from a new more reputable school?
i am currently attending UMUC(university of maryland university college). I can finish my current degree program (computer science/information technology) in a year and a half. The problem is that UMUC is not a very good school and I don't think I will be able to get a job when I am finished. Another problem is that I am not really learing anything. The school is filled with a bunch of bad instructors and care only about their paychecks and not teaching anyone. I have no work experience in the computers and I am now 27 so I am not getting any younger. However, I now I have a chance at attending UMBC(University of Maryland Baltimore County) which is a more reputable school. The bad thing is almost none of my credits from UMUC will transfer. So I am pretty much looking at starting from scratch and doing another 4 years. But a dregree from UMBC is a lot more valuable and I will get a much better education. Some people I have talked too said finish my current degree (umuc) and go straight into graduate school. However I will feel so unprepared and whatever masters degree program I enroll at I think I will struggle. Others say I should look for an internship and get some kind of work experience and continue with my current degree and I will be able to find a job regardless of what school I graduate from. SO, should I continure with my current bad degree or go to a different but better school and start from 0?

I truly understand your dilemma however I must agree with the advice to finish your degree. Are you paying for this education? If so, why would you waste all that time and money? In addition, I take mostly online classes and you have to do 90% of the work on your own. You cannot rely on teachers in any university, they are there to guide you however the responsibility to learn is on you. If you are having difficulty with the material then you need to seek out resources to help yourself. Are you working? If not, you should seek out an internship or employment of some sort in the field you are interested in so you can gain some practical knowledge. I do not mean to sound harsh but as you stated you are 27 and you have no time to waste. You need to get with the program now and forget about bad degree there is no such thing. Most employers are more concerned with what you have learned and the skills you bring to the table not your "pedigree". You have absolutely no time to go back, stop looking back. Start killing the books and dig in a bit deeper into whatever knowledge base is available to you. Seek out an internship or something so you can relate to what you are studying. Listen to some Dave Ramsey radio shows and start motivating yourself to achieving your goals. I am praying that you will take wise counsel from those around you and change your attitude. This thing about bad colleges is nonsense. There are people in some countries that would do anything for a drop of education and they would do great with it too. It's too late to go back now do the best with what you have. Find a job that will help to pay for your graduate degree if you need to have one. I am positive if you search you will find someone from UMUC who has graduated from the same program and is doing well. Come on, you can do this, go get it done. Move forward with a more positive attitude. Your future kids are depending on you to get this done so you can provide for them so get going now. I have no doubt you will be successful if you stick to your goals and stop listening to people about bad degree and good degree. Do not start from ground zero, it will be a mistake which will be costly. Time is more valuable than money. You can do this! Per Dave Ramsey: We hire people here every day, and where they went to college is a VERY MINOR blip on the radar.

2
finish at UMUC and try to get into a graduate program from a respectable program. Where you go to college matters, but as you progress in your career, it plays less and less of a role.

3
Really, you need to finish this degree and go to graduate school. Even a lower level one. You will be better off in the long run. As well, college is what you make of it. You may not be learning as much as you expect because you still have a high school mentality. College is about giving you only a bare framework and it is up to you to fill in the details on your own.

4
Isn't UMUC a community college? you can't go to grad school with a degree from a community college.

College in NYC or College on the outskirts of Baltimore?

College in NYC or College on the outskirts of Baltimore?
I'm stuck chosing between two colleges that i could be attending in the fall (depending on the one I chose). One is in NYC (to be specific is the New School in NYC) and then the other one is Loyola in Baltimore, Maryland. I can't decide if I want to go to the fast-paced/hardcore setting of NYC that might get stressful or might just be the energy I need. Or, if I'm interested in heading towards Baltimore even though its a bit far and living on the outskirts of the city. Is anyone living in Baltimore or NYC now as a college student that can describe the cultures to me? I really can't decide...

Two different worlds. Nothing compares to NYC. If you are okay with that life style, go for it. If you want about half speed on that, then Loyola is your school. Both schools are excellent, it has to be what you really want. It's really a win-win. Good Luck!

University of Maryland, Baltimore isn't nearly as good as USC. You'd be better off going of going to University of Maryland, College Park if you chose to come to MD.

I homeschooling my 13 y/o son for the first time in Nov07 & passed the school board review. The only reason I sent him back to school in Dec07 was because he was bored with being around only me all day long. Again it was our first time doing this I want to try homeschooling again (Sept08), but time with the support of a group/club/organization of homeschoolers. Believe me, after seeing what his final grades were from his school, I know I can do a better job at bringing him up to standards.

You don't really need to be close to home. It's better not to be *too* close, because then you'll be tempted to go home too much when things get tough (and that will hurt your social life and hinder your ability to really immerse yourself in college and college life.) If U Maryland feels 'right,' go there.

You can view the ranks of pharmacy schools by going to the US News and Reports, Best Colleges in America's website and doing a search for pharmacy schools.

2
At this point in time, there's a national shortage of pharmacists. Getting into any pharmacy school is fine. It's best to go to the one located in the state you want to live in. Your goal is to be licensed in that state so you can work in that state. The pharmacy school in that state is best suited to preparing you to be licensed in that state. CA has about 6 now (more coming). 2 are brand new and are still kind of on probation status. You can likely get a job graduating from any of them tho (the new ones haven't graduated a class yet I believe). Yes, there's a pecking order in prestige among these schools, but the demand is so high, I haven't seen the greater prestige amount to anything yet. I didn't bother checking into all the schools you listed, but I did a quick Yahoo search into Northeastern (randomly picked it). Right there on the PharmD page they talk about their 6 year program. So, this tells me you didn't bother looking at the web pages of any of these schools. Look up the web page of each pharmacy school you're interested in. Click onto the PharmD section. If there's an admissions page, that will tell you their requirements and that's usually where they have info on any 6 year or special programs they have. You'll get better and more detailed info on the basics by going through the school's webpage than you will by asking a broad and general question on Yahoo Answers.

3
UIC is a 4 year school. I believe Rutgers has a 6 year program. In California, you need a bachelors. With regards to the public schools, they give preference to their state residents before everyone else.

I am a junior in high school in the state of maryland. I'm looking for a college that can propel me to Dental school but I don't know where to go. The top 2 colleges on my list are: University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) University of Maryland College Park (University of Maryland) If you think I should be looking at any other colleges for pre-dental preparation, then I am more than welcoming to suggestions. They don't have to be in Maryland but I am preferring that they would be. Regardless of location, please list your suggestions. Thank You.

A college is good because of students who finished good. Pick a college that has more good student that had finished.

2
Pre-dental isn't a major. I had the choice of biology, biochemistry, or chemistry. I chose biology. You should visit each school and decide which school is best for you. Look at freshman graduation rates (those that enter as a freshman and graduate as a senior), look at what the alumni have said. I went to U of D Mercy and the freshman graduation rate is 52% and the alumni gave it a 10%. It's private but a really good school. I suggest smaller colleges because the student/professor ratio is better to get help you need.

I have a 3.23 cumulative gpa. No extra curricular activities. 1460 say score (980 math and reading yea I know that's terrible) I've taken hard classes such as AP Pschology, AP Lang and mostly honors classes. I've also gotten suspended from school in the 6th and 7th grades, and I got expelled in the last 3 months of 8th grade than had to go to an alternative school (basicAlly a school for expelled kids) for 1st semester of 9 th grade. I got all As' but 1 B each quarter while I was there. Also both of my brothers and my cousins have gone to university of maryland, college park. They obviously did a lot better than I did and didnt have any suspensions or anything. And I am a guy I live in Maryland

You should seek some type of school involvement. You wouldn't have any problems getting into college park with your gpa. Baltimore county in an honors school and I think you need at least a .... 3.50* to apply these days. Although, a 3.23 gpa is seen as below average at umbc. Most normal 4yr colleges usually accept all freshman who apply with decent GPA (above a 2.5). This is only because only 2/3 of those accepted can actually afford to attend.

Serious school advice PLEASE!!?

Serious school advice PLEASE!!?
Okay so here is the deal. I'm moving to Bowie Maryland with my aunt. I just graduated H.S and I did average well like 2.0 thats actually horrible. I played around but my senior year I stayed on honor roll by then it waas too late. So I want to go to school for mortuary science. NONE of the schools have campuses. But with my grades I need a community college first then transfer after my assiocates. Long story short I just can't stay in ohio I need to experience new things. Okay The only school that has mortuary science is in baltimore maryland. My aunt said NOOOO thats a bad area. Which is fine because she knows the city and I don't. I haven't applied at any schools their! School is my number on priorty so what should I do??? I have to be able to go to school in fall. And I can no longer stay with my parents. I also really want to do mortuary science and community college is the best road for me its cheaper..I'm poor and I can get good grades. Im so confused and heart broken!

One might say that you're in a grave situation.

2
Sometimes breaking the rules is doing the right thing. You should pack your bags and head to Baltimore.

3
I'm not exactly sure what your question is... If school is your number one priority, go to school. It sounds like you have a plan: enroll in a community college. Send in your applications. Make sure to apply for financial aid to help you out. When you meet with your adviser, be sure to discuss your plans to transfer to a college. The adviser may be able to help you determine which school offers programs that interest you AND will give you the most bang for your credit bucks. Each university transfers credits differently...some are more cooperative or generous than others. Your adviser may be able to help you choose classes that are more likely to transfer with the biggest benefit to you. If you need help with your work, look into a tutor. Some departments offer free help from students who are majoring in that subject matter. Once you get a few years of community college under your belt, I think that you will feel more confident.

4
Look into the mortuary science program at the Community College of Baltimore County in Catonsville. You'll have to do some driving to get there, but it's at the south end of Baltimore in a safe area near the UMBC campus and it's not that far in actual miles from Bowie. You should be able to take the BW Parkway to get there, so you won't even have to go on I-95. Do a Google search on the school for more information.

School Shooting and Conversation with my Fiance! IMPORTANT!!?

School Shooting and Conversation with my Fiance! IMPORTANT!!?
My fiance and I were having a confersation the other night after talking about the amish girls that were murdered. ( God bless their families). He happened to bring up a good point. He grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and he went to a "city school" there they have metal detectors and police men, however school shootings happen everyday and they never broadcast it over the news... He doesn't understand why "city schools" are being forgotten. Anyone have a suggestion or an answer to this one? I have no clue, I grew up in a small "country" town... thankfully no school shottings happend in my area! Any suggestions, comments or answers are greatly appreciated!

Sweetie, this site is not ready for the answer to that question.

2
It is an everyday happening in big city schools and people kind of expect it. In small towns you are shocked to hear of such a thing. Especially when it happens to some of the most quiet, non-violent citizens.

3
when violence breaks out in a one room Amish school house, its news, gang violence isnt uncommon, it's not newsworthy to anyone outside of the city. those five girls deaths were a huge blow to the entire community because there is next to no crime in that area

4
I think you answered your own question... Some (not all) inner-city schools experience high levels of violent behavior on a regular basis and have for some time. It's no longer news. Let me explain it this way: A man eating a sandwich isn't news. A man eating a sandwich that cures CANCER is news. It's just a matter of something being far enough from mundane, everyday activities to keep someone's interest. Remember, the news exists for the same reason as everything else in a capitalist marketplace... ...to make money.

This is the reason I'll never go to America. The land of the Free. I've been to a War Zone. It was OK while I was there but I wouldn't want to go back. Therefore, that why I wouldn't go to America. Did I read that there were more people murdered in Boston in a month than American Servicemen Killed in Iraq for the year. Safer in Iraq.

6
hmm im guessing. but in the 1990s of manchester UK we were compeared to the glory days of chicago gangsters with a drive by shooting being reported once a week at least. now its 2006 and its nothing new if it does happen. so we dont get as much coverage. papers print what sells. to a quiet town its big news to a city where its expected people say oh well and put the paper back on the self. a better answer is why you would need metal detectors anyway? im aware that americans feel the need to have a gun but i dont think my neighbour will need to be shot unless he has a gun in the first place. if no one has a gun no one gets shot. even though obviously the UK still has its gun shot victims more times then not its gang related rather then used on innocent people.

7
school shootings happen every day there...you answered your own question. It was so unexpected in a peaceful amish town. Part of the definition of "news" is something being out of the ordinary, rare...

8
Its just more alarming. A lot of people made a point to stay away from the city to protect their families, so finding out that there was a school shooting in somewhere that remote is terrifying to them. Also the fact that five lives were lost.

9
This is NOT an every day thing in large cities!!! I work for the school district in Las Vegas, we have alot of security because we have alot more children in one school then a smaller district would have. In the school I work at we have 3300 students. We have cops in school and campus security moniters and videos to protect the students and we keep constant watch. We take our jobs very seriously. In my experiance it is just as likely if not more so in a smaller town where guns are viewed as a normal thing to have in the home and not as vilified. It is that the adults in charge are not taking the right precautions because they have lulled themselves in a false sense of security because the population is going to be smaller and less diverse. When a gun is found on campus the student is immeditly expelled and taken away in cuffs, shootings are not takeb lightly and to allude that we do is a cruel uneducated insult. People need to do take the safety of their children seriously, no matter where they live. This is not a world where we can tell our selves that it only happens to others.

10
The school shootings in large cities tend to be gang related so they don't get as much coverage. It's a shame when anyone dies. I wish there was a real program to prevent gang membership, but as long as people feel isolated in their communities, they will either seek out the companionship of gangs, or they will seek revenge of some sort.

School shootings do NOT happen everyday in Baltimore. We've had a few shootings outside of schools in past years but I haven't heard of any shootings actually occuring inside of a city school. We certainly would have heard about it considering the fact that the Mayor of Baltimore is running for Governor. Thats not to say that Baltimore's city schools are Blue Ribbon material, the school system has major problems. I also won't deny that fights happen everyday, and I'm sure more serious incidents like stabbings happen and we don't hear about them. But if someone walks to into a school, be it an outsider or a student, and opens fire we'd hear about it. I can't speak for every school system but Baltimore's system has many problems. There are tons of kids who go to school everyday with a desire to learn, but their learning experience is interrupted by other kids who really could care less about being in school. On top of this teacher's salaries are low and its hard to get talent into the schools and keep it there, so the system basically accepts "anyone" who wants to teach, even if they aren't the best, or even status quo. Many students don't have parental support either, which trickles down to the kids who bring their problems to school. The state throws plenty of money at the "problem" but it is apparently not allocated correctly because the same problems persist. As the system gets worse and worse it just becomes an issue that everyone knows about, everyone has an opinion about, but no one has figured out how to fix. The subject of Baltimore's school system is discussed often, so I wouldn't say its "forgotten" but it certainly is "overlooked." I wish I had answers but I don't. I just know that its a big problem and hopefully some very smart person will come along and at least point us in the right direction.

Why aim for the stars when you can barely touch the clouds?

Why aim for the stars when you can barely touch the clouds?
I'm a sixteen year old girl from Baltimore Maryland, and growing up I've always heard kids saying they wanted to become the biggest and the best. Music producers, singers, song writers, actors, models. You name it. Realistically speaking when you're roaming the streets of Baltimore City and deliberately missing school, you probably can't even begin to comprehend the obstacles that it takes to get anywhere near that "dream." I just want to become a police officer, or school teacher or nurse; whereas everyone else I know is trying to aim for the stars when they can barely touch the clouds. Why is this?

Maybe because it's easier to work towards a short-term goal which you might not really want if you see it as a stepping stone to your dream job? At some point, these people might have to make do with the reality of where they can get in life. But perhaps the dream will make them try harder than they would without it.

2
Just to start an argument I believe school isn't the biggest priority. An education is usually best for people but your well being is much more important. Going to school will most likely open more opportunities for you to reach a dream then the latter. Many people dream big because it is simply something to aspire about and keep their spirits up. Later on in life I have to say people get their dreams crushed by reality. I won't be the person to tell anyone you can't do something but there will be someone sooner or later to get in your way. Dreaming to be "great" isn't such a bad thing as it can give you the confidence and will to do better than you would normally do even going to the extent as being able to change a mindset. This would would be nothing without police and a medical field so people shouldn't think that just because you want to be in law enforcement doesn't mean it isn't a great dream to YOU. Everyone sees things differently. I hope this helped you a little. ^-^

My friend and I are looking to start a zoology club within our high school. What sort of things can we do? We live near D.C., in Maryland specifically, and we weren't sure of activities that the club could sponsor... We've already come up with the ideas of visiting the National Zoo in Washington D.C, and the Baltimore Aquarium, and volunteering at local animal shelters, but what are some other things we can do?

Only 12% of University of Maryland (baltimore county) students get accepted with a 2.5-2..99 GPA average. However, because you've joined many activities, and worked, I think that you DO have a good chance of getting in. =)

UMd-BC is somewhat out of reach. UMd- Eastern Shores will probably accept you as an out-of-state student. Get your Anger Management problems under control, or don't bother attending university.

Anyone heard of a combined-medical school-undergraduate college program?
Ok, so i've heard from some sources that there are programs out there that enable a student to be guaranteed entry into a medical school if they go to the college associated with it. I know that the University of Maryland (Baltimore County) has one of these programs, but i have no idea what it's called, nor do I know the details of this program, if anyone has information, It would be greatly appreciated.

yes, but you should know that most medical schools don't do that program any more and most programs are built for primary care doctors not other types. that program is kind of dying.

2
There are a few programs that do this. That being said, all of these programs are nearly impossible to get into. Med schools are taking a massive gamble with you by letting you get into their school without looking at your college performance or MCAT scores. That's why there's usually only a small handful of students that get into each program (I've heard from 4-10). As for schools that have the programs, I know that USC has a 7-year medical school track. So does UC San Diego. NYU has a dentist school program. Caltech has a joint program with UCSD that lets you go to Caltech for your undergrad and guarantees you get into UCSD medical school. I know there's a couple of more programs out there. But the biggest problems with the programs is that they're only offered by medical schools that aren't too great to begin with. So by having these programs, the schools can attract very brilliant candidates who would otherwise never want to go to their medical school. Plus, I personally know a surgeon who was interviewing for residencies and rejected everyone who graduated from one of these programs simply because they went to one. So good luck if you want to apply, but my conclusion is that it's not worth the effort. It's probably better to go to a small liberal arts school and apply for med school from there. (Check medical school acceptance rates at Williams, Amherst, Pomona, etc. for their medical school acceptance rates versus that of state schools). The problem with that is you'll have to explain yourself whenever someone asks you where you go to school.

3
Yeah for sure couple of my friends actually turned down amazing universities to go to the medical school scholar's program for undergraduate study. The one that I know of is at UCSD where only a tiny percentage get in...so ya go here: http://meded.ucsd.edu/groups/med-scholars/faqs.html. Undergraduates from Stanford don't always get in either! Only like 15% do or something. It's intense though. And you are going to med school for sure if you get in so make the decision wisely :) Bonne chance monsieur.

4
Alan L mentioned some. Northwestern also has one. If you go to a school's med school website, look for it under "Programs" or "Degree Programs". They're usually called joint bachelor/MD programs. Otherwise, I disagree completely with his "advice." Med school is very difficult to get into. In general, if you get in anywhere, you're pretty happy. One of my biggest beefs is his claim that they're attached to "not too great" med schools. They're not. USC and Northwestern have them and they are quite prestigious. I had two friends go to Northwestern's program. They could still have applied to other med schools if they wanted to. They both chose to go to Northwestern cuz it's a really good med school and they got their admissions already. No real reason to expend precious time and money applying to other schools when they're already accepted to a really good one. The other reason why I think Alan L gave horrible advice is just because you apply to those 7 yr programs doesn't mean you can't apply to other colleges. Yes, they have very low admissions rates, but that's true of all prestigious colleges. Whether or not they have a 7 yr med program or not. He makes it sound like it's an exclusive choice and you can't pick any other school if you apply to it and get accepted. Oh, and my two friends did just fine. One's doing his residency for plastic surgery. I'm not sure what specialty the other friend is doing, but she did her residency at UCLA, one of the top ranked hospitals in the country. Coming from 7 yr med programs didn't hurt them at all. Alan L must be pulling crap from his ass.

5
The other posters have not addressed your question about UMBC. From looking at the UMBC website, there is no such degree program where one can obtain an undergraduate degree and continue on to the University of MD medical school. For the past 17 years, Boston University has a combined program called ENGMEDIC where a student can obtain a BS degree in Biomedical Engineering and a MD from BU's med school in 6-8 years depending on how many AP credits the student can transfer into the program.

6
I think you've been given erroneous information, perhaps based on this fact: All state-assisted medical schools are required to give preferential treatment to state residents. The University of Maryland's Student brochure states that in the "Selection Process" section. Here's a link: http://medschool.umaryland.edu/admissions/ The University of Maryland has three undergrad schools that account for the majority of the 77% of state-resident matriculants and they are UMCP, UMBC and JHU.

I think the school you are looking for is called a "University" or "College". Most forensic technician jobs require, at a minimum, a BS degree in a field of science. Some schools, like San Jose State University, actually offer a Forensic Science BS degree which has a heavy class load in the sciences. ***Edit*** Crime Scene Investigation is a TV Show! Most jurisdictions call them Forensic Technicians or some variation of it. And like I said, most require AT LEAST a Bachelor of Science degree in a science related field such as chemistry, biology, etc. Baltimore University has a Forensic Studies program.

DO NOT TAKE TOO MANY HARD SCIENCE CLASSES ALL AT ONCE. Your GPA is going to be EVERYTHING to you when applying to med school, do not try and do too much at once or you will get bad grades and med schools do not want that. You could ruin your chances of ever becoming a doctor if you let the gpa slip. You do not want any B or C if you can help it. You want to aim for nothing less than 4.0 and you need to structure your schedule to make it happen.

2
Lose the term Premed. You can't be 'pre-med' unless you get into medical school. Less than half of all QUALIFIED applicants, with bachelors/masters and docterate degrees and high gpa's get in. Therefore, if you don't get in, you were never really pre-med... Its more of a term used to denote a 'social status' saying you're pre-med is like calling your dog a pre- airline pilot. Sounds nice, but doesn't really mean anything. Your last post looks best.. biology lect, calc 2, psych, english. Most med schools require only calc 1. However, if you go up to calc 3, and take calculus based physics, you will have an advantage for the MCATs... while every other PREMED is trying to recall their algebraically derived physics formulas, you, having had calc 3 and calc based physics can derive all of your formulas. This is probably one of the reasons why engineers have one of the highest acceptance rates into medical school.
