What major should I go for, pre-pharmacy, or pre-med?
Im in high school and I am really confused on what major I should take in College. I am planning to attend the College of Notre Dame of Maryland in Baltimore. I'm not sure if I should study pre pharmacy or pre-med. I want something where I will make money. Im good at Math, not so much in science but Im willing to work hard. Please help me!! Any one who is a pharmacist or knows someone who is, please tell me your experience!!! Thanks!!!!!

I am in pharmacy school, and if you don't like science, you are screwed! You MUST love science...or they will be long 6 years of school. As far as med school, you will be studying science for longer time. If I were you, I'd reevaluate what you want in life...you can make money in other ways! GOOD LUCK!

I'm pre-pharmacy. I work in a pharmacy now and i LOVE it. The customers at the store are SOO nice. However, the one I work at is not very busy so I don't have as much stress. Also, I get to learn alot of stuff from the pharmacist I work with. She lives on her own and has an amazing house. I would do what you think is right. I changed my major once before I got into this field.

Pre-med and pre-pharmacy are not majors, but are nearly identical lists of required classes which may be found on the websites of medical and pharmacy schools. Any major is acceptable. May I suggest that you consider accounting as a career. In fact, you can major in it at many universities while you take the pre-med classes and can be admitted to medical school if you do well enough in science, etc. Then you will have a back-up if you are not admitted to medical or pharmacy school.

The College of Notre Dame in Maryland is a good choice. The college is opening a School of Pharmacy, and Notre Dame students have the inside track on admission. Also Notre Dame offers cross-registration for Johns Hopkins courses. Pre-Pharmacy/Pre-Med is not a "Major" รข€” it is a series of pre-requisite Medica//Pharmacy courses students take while completing a Major. The main error of students taking "pre-med/pharmacy" is that they don't realize most of them won't make it to these schools. Their Major should be chosen to give them good career prospects if they don't make it to Medical/Pharmacy School. The best Major for this purpose at Notre Dame of Maryland is Engineering.

What are the chances of getting in?
My friend from Church is applying to these universities this fall: Princeton, Cornell, University of Virginia, Johns Hopkins university, University of maryland college park and university of maryland baltimore county. She has as SAT score of around 1850 and has a GPA of 3.9ish. She has lots of extracurricular activities from church (playing the Cello and sunday school teaching). What are her chances of getting in?

Her chances are pretty good. She seems well rounded and has done well in school as well as done pretty well on the SAT's. I know an 1800 is a cut off for a lot of schools to get into the honors programs, so 1850 should be pretty solid to just get into the school.

I think she has a very good chance of getting into the University of Maryland Baltimore County and a reasonable chance at the University of Virginia. Her SAT and GPA are okay, but not spectacular, and Princeton, Cornell, and Johns Hopkins are highly competitive schools, while College Park is a very strong one. All except Baltimore County have national reputations. One thing that might make a difference is her class rank. I've seen people who said they had a 4.5 and were barely at the 50% of their high school class, so apparently their high schools gave REALLY easy grades. I don't know what a 3.9 means at her school, but I'm used to seeing scores over 4.0 and SATs well over 2000 for most of the schools you mention. As to the extracurriculars, they are fine, but will only help if she also has the academic qualifications. No school I know of will compromise their academic standards for a person who is engaged in many extracurricular activities, as much as they want that perfect student who is also well-rounded.

Which nursing school should I choose?
Which nursing school should I choose?
Hi everyone! I am from Maryland and I just got accepted to 2 nursing schools that I applied to:University of Maryland (Shady Grove) and Marymount University (BSN in nursing). Does anyone attend any of these 2? Which nursing program is better? Is University of Maryland at Shady grove has the same program as in Baltimore? Can't decide where to go!! Thanks!

Good question. It depends on what you want to do. A 2 year grad takes the same test as a 4 year grad. Go for your assoc at a tech school where you get great hands on clinicals. You will start giving IM injections your 1st or 2 nd quarter where a university BS student doesn't start clinicall until way down the road. If you want to work the floors and ICU's you want to be a tech student. If you want to go straight to administration where you do lots of paperwork you want to go straight to university BS. However, alot of places want to see at least 1 year experience on the hospital floors where you have proven your basic nursing skills. This can be a problem for BSN students who are heavy on theory and light on skill. Most students I knew wanted to be the best nurses possible. They would have been very embarrassed to be 2nd rate at starting IV's or drawing blood or assisting with chest tubes, etc.so everybody went to tech. Then once they passed the state board exams they enrolled in the university for the 3-4th year. It's cheaper this way and you get a better education.

We need full info on baltimore homeschooling?
We have just moved to Baltimore, have 2 kids, 10yrs and 12 yrs old. They have homeschooled alot before but not in the U.S. What are the laws in Maryland and are there any free or reasonably priced courses or neighborhood school groups. thanks, gary

What are some universities w/ good pre-med programs on the east coast?
I DON'T need any of the ivy league schools because I already probably know them and don't expect to to go to one. Also for undergrad I'd rather go to a cheaper, but good university. I'm already definitely applying to University of Maryland College Park and Baltimore County because those are decent schools where I live, but would you recommend any other decent ones around the east coast? (I plan to go to an optometry school for graduate school)

How about the University of Pittsburgh. They have a good medical school and they have really good bio-science programs. You do not have to go straight premed to get into medical school and honestly, you are better to have a solid degree in something like bio-engineering or genetics. That would give you more options when you graduate in case med school does not work out. Good luck.

Are the universities in Maryland hard to get into if you are out of state, such as University of Maryland at Baltimore? What are the requirements to get into such a school GPA? SAT? Extra curriculars? What is the best University in Maryland for me in your opinion? I am from California I have an accumulative unweighted GPA of 3.43, weighted of 3.71 student council, debate, president of one club. I don't want too big of a campus with too big of a student body. I prefer smaller schools with a great campus life with school spirit and a great social scene and a nice setting. Large city would be nice and a nice economic/political program. Which universities in Maryland would be good for me?

Maryland-College Park seems good. It's pretty close to Baltimore. You have a chance, ur GPA is decent, so I would apply.

DMX is right.. but beware UMCP is a big school. However, it has good traditions, ,school spirit and social events for students. The Economics program and Government&Politics (GVPT) program is one of the best in the countries. One of my majors is GVPT and I have professors that actually work in prestigious fields (ie consultant for WB, UN advisor, etc.). Professors have won academic awards such as the pulitzer award. It is also in a suburban area, but very close to Wash. D.C. (approx 3 mi to the border). --great internships and fed job potentials.
