College in NYC or College on the outskirts of Baltimore?
I'm stuck chosing between two colleges that i could be attending in the fall (depending on the one I chose). One is in NYC (to be specific is the New School in NYC) and then the other one is Loyola in Baltimore, Maryland. I can't decide if I want to go to the fast-paced/hardcore setting of NYC that might get stressful or might just be the energy I need. Or, if I'm interested in heading towards Baltimore even though its a bit far and living on the outskirts of the city. Is anyone living in Baltimore or NYC now as a college student that can describe the cultures to me? I really can't decide...

Two different worlds. Nothing compares to NYC. If you are okay with that life style, go for it. If you want about half speed on that, then Loyola is your school. Both schools are excellent, it has to be what you really want. It's really a win-win. Good Luck!

i would say in state for tuition purposes if money is not an option, do whatever your heart pleases but if ur a bit more conscious and dont want to end up spending extra thousands of dollars, just stay in maryland and move to SC after you get your degree a nursing degree is a nursing degree everywhere you go

University of Maryland, Baltimore isn't nearly as good as USC. You'd be better off going of going to University of Maryland, College Park if you chose to come to MD.

Are there any homeschooling group/clubs/organization out there for Baltimore or (state of) Maryland?
Are there any homeschooling group/clubs/organization out there for Baltimore or (state of) Maryland?
I homeschooling my 13 y/o son for the first time in Nov07 & passed the school board review. The only reason I sent him back to school in Dec07 was because he was bored with being around only me all day long. Again it was our first time doing this I want to try homeschooling again (Sept08), but time with the support of a group/club/organization of homeschoolers. Believe me, after seeing what his final grades were from his school, I know I can do a better job at bringing him up to standards.

Where should I go to school?
Where should I go to school?
I am starting college in the fall, and I still do not know where I'm going. I'm down to two colleges. Cleveland State University, and University of Maryland: Baltimore County. I live in Michigan and Cleveland is much closer, but UMBC is a much better school, and I like the campus more.

You don't really need to be close to home. It's better not to be *too* close, because then you'll be tempted to go home too much when things get tough (and that will hurt your social life and hinder your ability to really immerse yourself in college and college life.) If U Maryland feels 'right,' go there.

Docters note for school?
My daugter is sick, and today will be her third day being out. Currently we don't have the money to see the docter and she is getting better, therefore is really no need to see to the docter. Do any of you know what the policy is in Baltimore, Maryland as far do you need to bring a docters note if a child is absent from school for 3 days?

Either a doctor's note or you may simply visit your daughter's school and explain it in private to her teacher or the school's principal. Good Luck!

You can view the ranks of pharmacy schools by going to the US News and Reports, Best Colleges in America's website and doing a search for pharmacy schools.
2
At this point in time, there's a national shortage of pharmacists. Getting into any pharmacy school is fine. It's best to go to the one located in the state you want to live in. Your goal is to be licensed in that state so you can work in that state. The pharmacy school in that state is best suited to preparing you to be licensed in that state. CA has about 6 now (more coming). 2 are brand new and are still kind of on probation status. You can likely get a job graduating from any of them tho (the new ones haven't graduated a class yet I believe). Yes, there's a pecking order in prestige among these schools, but the demand is so high, I haven't seen the greater prestige amount to anything yet. I didn't bother checking into all the schools you listed, but I did a quick Yahoo search into Northeastern (randomly picked it). Right there on the PharmD page they talk about their 6 year program. So, this tells me you didn't bother looking at the web pages of any of these schools. Look up the web page of each pharmacy school you're interested in. Click onto the PharmD section. If there's an admissions page, that will tell you their requirements and that's usually where they have info on any 6 year or special programs they have. You'll get better and more detailed info on the basics by going through the school's webpage than you will by asking a broad and general question on Yahoo Answers.

UIC is a 4 year school. I believe Rutgers has a 6 year program. In California, you need a bachelors. With regards to the public schools, they give preference to their state residents before everyone else.

What are some good colleges for a pre-dental student?
I am a junior in high school in the state of maryland. I'm looking for a college that can propel me to Dental school but I don't know where to go. The top 2 colleges on my list are: University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) University of Maryland College Park (University of Maryland) If you think I should be looking at any other colleges for pre-dental preparation, then I am more than welcoming to suggestions. They don't have to be in Maryland but I am preferring that they would be. Regardless of location, please list your suggestions. Thank You.

A college is good because of students who finished good. Pick a college that has more good student that had finished.
2
Pre-dental isn't a major. I had the choice of biology, biochemistry, or chemistry. I chose biology. You should visit each school and decide which school is best for you. Look at freshman graduation rates (those that enter as a freshman and graduate as a senior), look at what the alumni have said. I went to U of D Mercy and the freshman graduation rate is 52% and the alumni gave it a 10%. It's private but a really good school. I suggest smaller colleges because the student/professor ratio is better to get help you need.

I have a 3.23 cumulative gpa. No extra curricular activities. 1460 say score (980 math and reading yea I know that's terrible) I've taken hard classes such as AP Pschology, AP Lang and mostly honors classes. I've also gotten suspended from school in the 6th and 7th grades, and I got expelled in the last 3 months of 8th grade than had to go to an alternative school (basicAlly a school for expelled kids) for 1st semester of 9 th grade. I got all As' but 1 B each quarter while I was there. Also both of my brothers and my cousins have gone to university of maryland, college park. They obviously did a lot better than I did and didnt have any suspensions or anything. And I am a guy I live in Maryland

You should seek some type of school involvement. You wouldn't have any problems getting into college park with your gpa. Baltimore county in an honors school and I think you need at least a .... 3.50* to apply these days. Although, a 3.23 gpa is seen as below average at umbc. Most normal 4yr colleges usually accept all freshman who apply with decent GPA (above a 2.5). This is only because only 2/3 of those accepted can actually afford to attend.

Serious school advice PLEASE!!?
Okay so here is the deal. I'm moving to Bowie Maryland with my aunt. I just graduated H.S and I did average well like 2.0 thats actually horrible. I played around but my senior year I stayed on honor roll by then it waas too late. So I want to go to school for mortuary science. NONE of the schools have campuses. But with my grades I need a community college first then transfer after my assiocates. Long story short I just can't stay in ohio I need to experience new things. Okay The only school that has mortuary science is in baltimore maryland. My aunt said NOOOO thats a bad area. Which is fine because she knows the city and I don't. I haven't applied at any schools their! School is my number on priorty so what should I do??? I have to be able to go to school in fall. And I can no longer stay with my parents. I also really want to do mortuary science and community college is the best road for me its cheaper..I'm poor and I can get good grades. Im so confused and heart broken!

Sometimes breaking the rules is doing the right thing. You should pack your bags and head to Baltimore.
3
I'm not exactly sure what your question is... If school is your number one priority, go to school. It sounds like you have a plan: enroll in a community college. Send in your applications. Make sure to apply for financial aid to help you out. When you meet with your adviser, be sure to discuss your plans to transfer to a college. The adviser may be able to help you determine which school offers programs that interest you AND will give you the most bang for your credit bucks. Each university transfers credits differently...some are more cooperative or generous than others. Your adviser may be able to help you choose classes that are more likely to transfer with the biggest benefit to you. If you need help with your work, look into a tutor. Some departments offer free help from students who are majoring in that subject matter. Once you get a few years of community college under your belt, I think that you will feel more confident.
4
Look into the mortuary science program at the Community College of Baltimore County in Catonsville. You'll have to do some driving to get there, but it's at the south end of Baltimore in a safe area near the UMBC campus and it's not that far in actual miles from Bowie. You should be able to take the BW Parkway to get there, so you won't even have to go on I-95. Do a Google search on the school for more information.

School Shooting and Conversation with my Fiance! IMPORTANT!!?
School Shooting and Conversation with my Fiance! IMPORTANT!!?
My fiance and I were having a confersation the other night after talking about the amish girls that were murdered. ( God bless their families). He happened to bring up a good point. He grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and he went to a "city school" there they have metal detectors and police men, however school shootings happen everyday and they never broadcast it over the news... He doesn't understand why "city schools" are being forgotten. Anyone have a suggestion or an answer to this one? I have no clue, I grew up in a small "country" town... thankfully no school shottings happend in my area! Any suggestions, comments or answers are greatly appreciated!

Sweetie, this site is not ready for the answer to that question.
2
It is an everyday happening in big city schools and people kind of expect it. In small towns you are shocked to hear of such a thing. Especially when it happens to some of the most quiet, non-violent citizens.
3
when violence breaks out in a one room Amish school house, its news, gang violence isnt uncommon, it's not newsworthy to anyone outside of the city. those five girls deaths were a huge blow to the entire community because there is next to no crime in that area
4
I think you answered your own question... Some (not all) inner-city schools experience high levels of violent behavior on a regular basis and have for some time. It's no longer news. Let me explain it this way: A man eating a sandwich isn't news. A man eating a sandwich that cures CANCER is news. It's just a matter of something being far enough from mundane, everyday activities to keep someone's interest. Remember, the news exists for the same reason as everything else in a capitalist marketplace... ...to make money.
5
This is the reason I'll never go to America. The land of the Free. I've been to a War Zone. It was OK while I was there but I wouldn't want to go back. Therefore, that why I wouldn't go to America. Did I read that there were more people murdered in Boston in a month than American Servicemen Killed in Iraq for the year. Safer in Iraq.
6
hmm im guessing. but in the 1990s of manchester UK we were compeared to the glory days of chicago gangsters with a drive by shooting being reported once a week at least. now its 2006 and its nothing new if it does happen. so we dont get as much coverage. papers print what sells. to a quiet town its big news to a city where its expected people say oh well and put the paper back on the self. a better answer is why you would need metal detectors anyway? im aware that americans feel the need to have a gun but i dont think my neighbour will need to be shot unless he has a gun in the first place. if no one has a gun no one gets shot. even though obviously the UK still has its gun shot victims more times then not its gang related rather then used on innocent people.
7
school shootings happen every day there...you answered your own question. It was so unexpected in a peaceful amish town. Part of the definition of "news" is something being out of the ordinary, rare...
8
Its just more alarming. A lot of people made a point to stay away from the city to protect their families, so finding out that there was a school shooting in somewhere that remote is terrifying to them. Also the fact that five lives were lost.
9
This is NOT an every day thing in large cities!!! I work for the school district in Las Vegas, we have alot of security because we have alot more children in one school then a smaller district would have. In the school I work at we have 3300 students. We have cops in school and campus security moniters and videos to protect the students and we keep constant watch. We take our jobs very seriously. In my experiance it is just as likely if not more so in a smaller town where guns are viewed as a normal thing to have in the home and not as vilified. It is that the adults in charge are not taking the right precautions because they have lulled themselves in a false sense of security because the population is going to be smaller and less diverse. When a gun is found on campus the student is immeditly expelled and taken away in cuffs, shootings are not takeb lightly and to allude that we do is a cruel uneducated insult. People need to do take the safety of their children seriously, no matter where they live. This is not a world where we can tell our selves that it only happens to others.
10
The school shootings in large cities tend to be gang related so they don't get as much coverage. It's a shame when anyone dies. I wish there was a real program to prevent gang membership, but as long as people feel isolated in their communities, they will either seek out the companionship of gangs, or they will seek revenge of some sort.

School shootings do NOT happen everyday in Baltimore. We've had a few shootings outside of schools in past years but I haven't heard of any shootings actually occuring inside of a city school. We certainly would have heard about it considering the fact that the Mayor of Baltimore is running for Governor. Thats not to say that Baltimore's city schools are Blue Ribbon material, the school system has major problems. I also won't deny that fights happen everyday, and I'm sure more serious incidents like stabbings happen and we don't hear about them. But if someone walks to into a school, be it an outsider or a student, and opens fire we'd hear about it. I can't speak for every school system but Baltimore's system has many problems. There are tons of kids who go to school everyday with a desire to learn, but their learning experience is interrupted by other kids who really could care less about being in school. On top of this teacher's salaries are low and its hard to get talent into the schools and keep it there, so the system basically accepts "anyone" who wants to teach, even if they aren't the best, or even status quo. Many students don't have parental support either, which trickles down to the kids who bring their problems to school. The state throws plenty of money at the "problem" but it is apparently not allocated correctly because the same problems persist. As the system gets worse and worse it just becomes an issue that everyone knows about, everyone has an opinion about, but no one has figured out how to fix. The subject of Baltimore's school system is discussed often, so I wouldn't say its "forgotten" but it certainly is "overlooked." I wish I had answers but I don't. I just know that its a big problem and hopefully some very smart person will come along and at least point us in the right direction.

Safer in Iraq.

hmm im guessing. but in the 1990s of manchester UK we were compeared to the glory days of chicago gangsters with a drive by shooting being reported once a week at least. now its 2006 and its nothing new if it does happen. so we dont get as much coverage. papers print what sells. to a quiet town its big news to a city where its expected people say oh well and put the paper back on the self. a better answer is why you would need metal detectors anyway? im aware that americans feel the need to have a gun but i dont think my neighbour will need to be shot unless he has a gun in the first place. if no one has a gun no one gets shot. even though obviously the UK still has its gun shot victims more times then not its gang related rather then used on innocent people.

school shootings happen every day there...you answered your own question. It was so unexpected in a peaceful amish town. Part of the definition of "news" is something being out of the ordinary, rare...

Its just more alarming. A lot of people made a point to stay away from the city to protect their families, so finding out that there was a school shooting in somewhere that remote is terrifying to them. Also the fact that five lives were lost.

What are some good universities for someone who wants to do pre-dental?
What are some good universities for someone who wants to do pre-dental?
I am a junior in high school in the state of maryland. I'm looking for a college that can propel me to Dental school but I dont know where to go. The top 2 colleges on my list are: University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) University of Maryland College Park (University of Maryland) If you think I should be looking at any other colleges for pre-dental preparation, then I am more than welcoming to suggestions. They dont have to be in Maryland but I am preferring that they would be. Regardless of location, please list your suggestions. Thank You.

i think that if you can get into a good college then do so and learn more so you can get a good job. other jobs which require medium level of training but can earn you money easily are jobs like car mechanics or engineers so jobs in IT which are on the the rise so try searching on google and don't pick these payday jobs and work from home jobs because most are scams. by the way im 15 from uk looking forward to go to college and do chemistry and biology. good luck
